It is defined as a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, stormwater networks, stormwater overland flow paths, sanitary sewer networks, water networks and systems, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings.

Civil engineering applies to and takes place across public institutions like local councils and national government; and also private institutions like individual households, commercial companies, and international companies.
