The IKEA Distribution Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, demonstrates how innovative structural engineering can deliver exceptional value through efficiency and cost reduction. This 20,000m² facility, constructed with custom steel portal frames, highlights our ability to challenge conventional practices and achieve outstanding results.

Our approach significantly reduced costs by adopting a comprehensive and pragmatic design strategy. Key measures included providing designs for both Steltech and CWB portal frames, enabling the contractor to secure competitive pricing. We also optimised and rationalized the purlin and girt design, applying targeted engineering solutions rather than defaulting to the most conservative design across the building, as is common in the industry.

Additional savings were achieved by eliminating unnecessary foundation structures, such as tie beams, and simplifying and standardising footing designs. These changes not only reduced material use but also streamlined construction processes, further enhancing cost-effectiveness.
