Kāinga Haumaru is a new Community Housing Provider dedicated to supporting people in recovery by offering secure, sustainable housing. DHC provided structural engineering services for the two-storey walk-up apartment development, achieving the architectural brief with extensive input from iwi and community stakeholders.
The 14 apartments feature striking architectural elements such as cantilevered roofs and wing walls, allowing the building to blend with its surrounding environment. The design concept, ‘Pokohiwi ki pokohiwi’, represents residents standing shoulder to shoulder, united and supported. Key principles such as Manaakitanga (hospitality and care), Hau Ora (wellbeing), and Kaitiakitanga (guardianship) also guided the development, ensuring it honours both the community and the environment with respect and responsibility.
