Te Taumata o Kupe, located at Te Mahurehure Marae in Point Chevalier, Auckland, was envisioned as an iconic urban cultural community hub dedicated to preserving and sharing mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge), particularly the legendary voyages and teachings of master navigator Kupe. Designed by TOA Architects, the building encapsulates indigenous storytelling through its dynamic, curved form, extensive use of artistic glazing, and carefully considered symbolism that evokes Kupe's oceanic journeys and celestial navigation.

DHC provided critical structural and civil engineering support, partnering closely with TOA Architects to bring the ambitious architectural vision to life. The building features a 604m², two-level structure with a minimalistic yet robust curved steel superstructure. This innovative structural approach supports the building's organic form, enhancing its artistic expression while ensuring stability and resilience. The design elements, such as the diagonal wind brace mimicking traditional Māori sails and the elevated platform suggesting the taumata platforms of Polynesia, were carefully integrated into the structural design, enabling the building to appear as if in motion, symbolizing Kupe’s historic journey.
